Breathing Life Into Dance Breathes Life into
the Reader’s Soul

Robin Conrad Sturm has been involved in classical ballet her entire life, from student, to professional dancer, choreographer and teacher. Her lifetime of experience provides not only a deep well of practical advice and application for any child and parents involved in dance, but her perspective and principles offer a fresh and loving approach to teaching dance as a respected art form to students and their teachers. Young children, seasoned adults, and every level in between will discover an aspect of themselves that longs to be expressive, whether on the public stage or for their own personal fulfillment.

Robin began her training at seven and a half years of age at the famous Washington School of the Ballet under the watchful eye of Mary Day. She later won scholarships to train in New York City at the School of American Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre School. After graduation from the Academy of the Washington School of the Ballet and working her way to a principle dancer with the Washington Ballet, Robin discovered that there is infinitely more to art and expression than just perfecting a grueling technique. That path finally brought her to open her own school which she directs, the Northern Virginia Dance Academy, and a ballet company, the Asaph Dance Ensemble, which she co-directs with her husband, Robert.

Robin has now brought her training that she received at the Washington School of the Ballet and her professional experience with the Washington Ballet into a book, entitled Breathing Life Into Dance. Her experiences have cultivated and developed a wisdom that she has gleaned and now imparts covering every aspect surrounding a dancer’s life, from that very first class all the way to retirement and beyond!

Kevin McKenzie, Artistic Director of the American Ballet Theatre writes, “ Robin was privileged to be influenced by one of the most gifted and holistically minded teachers in America, and that influence has been translated into a comprehensive and sensitive guide to teachers, students and their parents. It is an absolute “must-read” for absolutely anyone involved with educating children in the field of dance. It addresses the issues from cradle to grave in the life of (professional) dancers, and more importantly, issues relating to a support system needed for those dancers. The book is simply so insightful that one is filled with Robin’s love of the art form and gratitude for having spent a life revolving within it.”

Combined with a forward written by critically acclaimed principle ballerina Amanda McKerrow, Breathing Life Into Dance provides that crucial support and guidance to open up a world of emotional awareness and love of the art.
